How to build a loyalty scheme that lasts

Most UK shoppers already belong to at least one loyalty scheme, and plenty belong to several. Getting people to join is rarely the hard part any more. The harder job is building a scheme customers can rely on, which also gives your marketing team something useful back.

This guide covers what separates a scheme that lasts from one that fades, the steps to build one, and where to begin.

What makes a loyalty scheme work?

Epsilon has worked in loyalty for more than 50 years. In that time, we've found marketers need two things from a loyalty partner.

  1. Trust. A scheme your customers can rely on, and one you can rely on too. Every interaction should be consistent and informed by what you know about the member, so confidence in the brand builds over time.
  2. Freedom. Room to scale on your own terms. You should be able to launch quickly and keep improving the scheme without hitting a ceiling or having to replatform.

When both are in place, loyalty stops being a monthly promotion bolted onto the end of the plan. It becomes a source of growth. It sharpens paid media, deepens customer relationships and gives you a clearer read on what is actually driving sales.

How to build a loyalty scheme that lasts

  • Decide what the scheme is for. Pick one business outcome, such as visit frequency, basket size or retention in a category, before you design a single reward.
  • Offer value beyond discounts. Price rewards still matter, but mix in early access, experiences and recognition so the scheme is harder to copy.
  • Keep the rules simple. Members should understand how to earn and spend without reading the small print, and they should see a reward early.
  • Make every touchpoint consistent. The app, the till, email and the website should all recognise the member and tell the same story.
  • Be open about the data exchange. Explain what you collect and what members get in return, and build consent in from the start so the scheme holds up under GDPR.
  • Connect loyalty data to your media. Consented first-party data can find people who look like your best members, and it can stop you paying to acquire customers you already have.
  • Plan to evolve. Choose a platform that lets you test new tiers, partners or gamification without starting again.
  • Measure what matters. Active members and incremental spend tell you more than sign-up numbers.

Where do I start with a loyalty scheme?

Start with an honest look at what you already have. Would your customers call the scheme dependable? Could your team change a reward or launch a new tier this quarter without a long IT project? If either answer is no, that is where the work begins.

Epsilon designs programmes that stay consistent and insight-led across every channel. We build them to scale and change as your business does, without a re-platforming project every few years. And because loyalty data connects to Epsilon's wider identity and media capability, the scheme also informs how you plan, target and measure the rest of your marketing.
